Also known as suction assisted lipectomy (SAL), liposuction is a very popular and effective procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits that have not responded to exercise or diet. It is not designed to replace diet or exercise, and it is often more effective for patients who are not significantly overweight.

Through multiple small incisions, a narrow and hollow tube (cannula) is used to dislodge and remove stubborn excess fat deposits from the affected areas. By carefully moving the cannula in a fluid back-and-forth motion, excess fat deposits can be successfully removed, and the area can be contoured to the patient’s desired results. Liposuction results are generally permanent, but fat deposits can return in cases where excessive weight gain occurs.

Due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, aging, or heredity, skin can lose its elasticity and become loose and/or dimpled. A body lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is designed to rejuvenate the skin on the torso and upper legs to deliver a firm and contoured appearance. This type of appearance is widely seen as a sign of physical fitness and health. Where skin has lost elasticity, traditional exercise and diet may have no effect on the appearance of loose or sagging skin. In these cases, a body lift may restore the skin’s elasticity, resulting in a more smooth and contoured appearance.

A body lift works by removing excess skin, fat, and tissue from the affected areas while also tightening the underlying tissue. Depending on the amount of correction necessary, the size, length, and location of the incision will vary. A body lift can correct loose or sagging skin and has also been known to minimize cellulite in the affected areas. Dr. Swail may also recommend combining a body lift with additional procedures like a breast lift or liposuction to maintain body proportion.

Also known as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty is designed to correct loose or sagging skin on the abdomen. Due to pregnancy, weight loss, age, or heredity, skin can lose its elasticity and become loose. The best candidates for this procedure have pockets of fat or loose skin that have not responded well to diet and exercise. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat deposits while tightening the underlying muscles in the abdomen to ensure long-lasting results. By removing the excess skin, the overall skin elasticity can be restored to a more natural state, and the loose look and feel of the abdomen can be corrected. The result is a firm and more smoothly contoured abdomen. Abdominoplasty will leave a permanent scar stretching between the hips, although it should be low enough for a bikini to conceal it.

The upper arms can become inelastic, loose, and flabby resulting from substantial weight loss, weight gain, or simply the effects of aging, skin on. An arm lift (brachioplasty) reduces the excess skin and fat from the upper arm, and reshapes the arm to produce a new, smoother and firmer arm contour.

Dr. Swail typically recommends partnering an arm lift with liposuction to remove excess fat and contour the shape of the arm. An arm lift will provide a more toned and proportionate appearance to the arms while restoring the skin’s natural elasticity.

Inelastic skin can form on the thigh due to extreme weight loss. A thigh lift is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper legs to improve the overall contour of the leg and restore natural skin elasticity.

The smoother and tighter contour that results from a thigh lift is almost immediately visible following a thigh lift procedure. Once swelling and bruising subside after several weeks, the results will improve and the dramatically improved skin quality will be more apparent in both touch and feel.
