Because it is often a sign of a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness, many people desire a well-toned body with smooth contours. In some cases, this cannot be achieved through a healthy diet and exercise alone due to a lack of skin elasticity and uneven contours. Dr. Swail’s body lift procedure is designed to remove excess skin and fat in order to create a smooth and firm body contour. A number of factors can cause the skin to lose elasticity including aging, pregnancy, sun damage, and genetic factors. All of these factors can contribute to loose or sagging skin around the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and arms.
Much like an arm lift or thigh lift, a body lift uses the same techniques to correct multiple areas of the body. A body lift is often combined with additional procedures, such as a breast lift to ensure proper body proportion. By removing excess skin and fat from the torso and upper thigh, a more youthful and healthy appearance is restored.
Body Lift Procedure
Since no two body lift procedures are the same, the size and position of incisions will be unique to the individual needs of the patient. For a complete lower body lift, a circumferential incision is made around the body. Once the incision is made, an apron of skin, excess tissue, and fat are excised from the body, and the remaining tissue is repositioned and tightened.
In some cases, Dr. Swail may recommend a combination of liposuction and surgical body lifts to achieve the best results and maintain a balanced body proportion. Once the desired contour is achieved, the remaining skin and tissue is re-draped over the affected area and the incisions are closed.
Body Lift Results
Body lift results are immediately visible. As swelling and bruising subside over time, the results will continue to improve. A body lift will result in a firm and more youthful body contour and, in many cases, correct cellulite and dimples. Due to the extent of the surgical procedure and the amount of skin removed, visible scarring will be visible around the waist, but can often be concealed by bikinis. Depending on the amount of correction necessary, the visible scarring from a body lift will vary from patient to patient.
Dr. Swail meets with each patient personally to discuss his or her desired outcome and expectations prior to each body lift procedure. This allows Dr. Swail to design a customized procedure to achieve great long-lasting results.

Dr. Jeffrey Swail is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the Colorado Medical Society, and the Boulder County Medical Society.
Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, he earned his medical degree in 1989 and completed surgical training at Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
