Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty (the procedure commonly known as a tummy tuck) is designed to flatten the abdomen and, in most cases, restore weakened or separated muscles. Dr. Jeffrey Swail’s tummy tuck procedure creates an abdominal appearance and profile that is smoother and firmer. The most common causes leading to a protruding, loose, or sagging abdomen are:
- Pregnancy
- Aging
- Significant weight loss
- Heredity
- Prior surgery
Specifically, significant weight gain and pregnancy can stretch the abdominal skin, diminishing its natural elasticity. A tummy tuck can restore the skin’s natural elasticity as well as repair any damage done to the underlying muscles.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Procedure
A tummy tuck procedure begins with a horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and usually above the naval. The incision is made along the natural fold of the waistline to reduce visible scarring. The size and length of the incision will vary upon the degree of correction necessary. In most cases, an additional incision is made above the naval, if there is excess skin above the naval that needs to be removed. Once the incision is made, Dr. Swail gently removes excess tissue and fat from the abdomen, creating an ideal contour. Once exposed, the underlying muscles are repaired and sutured if needed. Repairing any damaged underlying muscles can create a firm and flat abdominal profile that ensures longer lasting results.
Once the desired contour is achieved, the skin is then re-draped over the abdomen, and any excess skin is removed. By removing the excess skin, the overall elasticity of the skin can be restored to a more natural state and the loose look and feel of the abdomen can be corrected.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Results
The results for this procedure can be seen once bruising and swelling subside. Recovery times vary greatly depending on the amount of correction performed and the size of incision necessary. Many patients are able to stand upright after about a week. Depending on the scope of the procedure and amount of correction necessary, recovery times can range from 8 weeks to 2 months. Abdominoplasty will leave a permanent horizontal scar that stretches between the hips, but one that is generally low enough to be hidden by a bikini.

For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
