Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation (also known as breast enhancement or breast implants) is one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery today. The procedure is designed to improve the size and shape of breasts that are naturally small or that have lost volume due to pregnancy or weight loss. Breast augmentation uses implants to produce fuller breasts or restore volume that has been lost over time. There can be some improvement in ptosis (sagging) of the breasts, but in cases where sagging is more extreme, Dr. Swail may recommend combining this procedure with a breast lift to achieve optimal results. Breast augmentation can:
- Increase fullness and projection of breasts
- Improve the balance and proportion of the overall body appearance
- Enhance self-esteem and self-confidence
Breast Augmentation Procedure
There are two incision locations that Dr Swail generally uses for breast augmentation. The location of an incision point will depend upon the type and size of implant, and a patient’s own anatomy. The different incision locations include:
- Inframammary incision: This incision is made along the natural fold at the base of the breast. This is the most commonly used incision point within our practice because it is usually well hidden within the natural fold of the breast, and gives Dr Swail excellent access to the pocket that will be created for the implant to sit in.
- Periareolar incision: This incision is made along the edge of the areola. This incision point also gives excellent access to the implant pocket but can sometimes result in a more apparent scar than an inframammary incision. A patent’s anatomy will be a factor in choosing which incision point is best.
Along with incision location, Dr Swail will also discuss implant location with you. Implants can be placed above or below the pectoral muscle. Patients often ask about “dual plane” placement, which Dr Swail will review as well. The best placement for implants will depend on a patient’s goals, anatomy and lifestyle. Mostly commonly, implants will be placed below muscle, but there are instances where above is a better option. This will be discussed in depth in consultation.
Dr. Swail has a number of implant options available for patients and will discuss this in consultation as well. Amongst the various decisions to be made are saline vs silicone, size, profile and brand. To make these decisions, Dr Swail will discuss with each patient their own goals, the FDA’s recommendations for follow up screening/replacement after augmentation, and the pros and cons of each of the various options.
Breast Augmentation Results
Results from a breast augmentation are immediately visible following the procedure. As swelling subsides and the muscles relax, the full results of the procedure will become apparent. Most patients can resume light activity after four to seven days and return to strenuous activity after about six to eight weeks.

Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, he earned his medical degree in 1989 and completed surgical training at Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
