Breast Explant Procedure
Breast explant surgery is tailored to the individual needs of each patient. The surgical plan depends on factors such as implant type, implant placement, the condition of the capsule surrounding the implant, and the patient’s aesthetic goals.
Common techniques used during breast explant surgery include:
- Implant Removal: In some cases, the breast implant can simply be removed through the original incision used for breast augmentation. This approach is typically used when the surrounding capsule is healthy and there are no complications.
- Capsulectomy: A capsulectomy involves removing part or all of the scar tissue capsule that naturally forms around the implant. This technique may be recommended when there is capsular contracture, implant rupture, or other complications.
- En Bloc Capsulectomy: In certain situations, the implant and the surrounding capsule are removed together as one unit. This technique may be considered when patients request complete capsule removal or when specific medical concerns are present.
- Breast Lift (Optional): After implant removal, some patients choose to combine explant surgery with a breast lift to improve breast shape, reposition the nipple, and address loose skin. This can help restore a more youthful and natural breast contour.

Dr. Jeffrey Swail is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the Colorado Medical Society, and the Boulder County Medical Society.
Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, he earned his medical degree in 1989 and completed surgical training at Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
