Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A breast lift (mastopexy) is performed to give breasts to a more youthful shape and position. Over time, breasts can begin to sag for a number of reasons, losing their shape, fullness, and/or skin elasticity. These changes can be a result of:
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Significant weight loss/gain
- Aging
- Gravity
- Heredity
Since a breast lift does not change the overall volume of the breast, it is often paired with a breast augmentation or breast reduction to achieve the best results. This should be considered when you are thinking about undergoing a breast lift, and it should be discussed with Dr. Swail prior to the procedure.
Breast Lift Procedure
There are four different incision patterns that are commonly used with breast lift procedures: crescentic lift, peri areolar lift, the so-called “lollipop” scar pattern, and the so-called “anchor” pattern. Which one is used depends on a patient’s breast size and shape, size and position of the areola, the amount of correction needed, and the skin’s elasticity. Dr. Swail will do a full examination prior to the procedure to determine which pattern would be most appropriate given the patient’s unique needs and discuss in depth the pros and cons of scar quality for each option.
Once the incision pattern is determined, Dr. Swail lifts and reshapes the underlying breast tissue. When the desired contour is achieved, any excess skin is removed, and a subcutaneous suture pulls the remaining skin closed. Depending on the amount of correction necessary, the nipple and areola may be repositioned to a more natural height. In cases where areolas have become enlarged, they can be reduced by excising skin at the perimeter.
Breast Lift Results
The results of a breast lift are immediately visible following the procedure. Over time, swelling will decrease and scars will become lighter and flatter. Following the procedure, dressings and bandages will cover the incisions, and a support bra or elastic bandage will support the breasts during the healing process. The elastic bandage or support bra will also help to minimize swelling and reduce recovery time.

Dr. Jeffrey Swail is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the Colorado Medical Society, and the Boulder County Medical Society.
Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, he earned his medical degree in 1989 and completed surgical training at Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
