Breast Reduction

As one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, breast reduction is designed to ease the physical and emotional discomfort associated with large and heavy breasts. Women can experience pain and discomfort in their shoulders, neck, and back due to the excessive weight and ptosis (sagging) of the breasts. With a consistently high patient satisfaction rate, this procedure removes excess breast tissue and reshapes the breast to a more proportional and natural size and shape. A breast lift is combined with breast reduction to restore a more natural and youthful breast position.

Breast Reduction Procedure

The most commonly used incisions will result in a scar pattern often referred to as a “Lollipop” or “J pattern”, or an inverted “T” or “anchor” scar.  A lollipop scar typically goes around the areola, proceeds vertically down and then toward the base of the breast will continue only laterally, giving the lower part of the incision the shape of a letter J.   An anchor scar typically goes around the areola, proceeds vertically down, and then transversely at the fold under the breast, giving the lower part of the incision the shape of an upside-down letter T. Because of Dr Swail’s unique way of manipulating breast tissue for this procedure, most often he can achieve the desired size and shape using a J pattern scar and avoiding any scarring of the medial breast altogether.  In some cases of very large reduction or significant laxity in the medial breast tissue, an inverted T scar pattern is necessary.

Once the incision type is determined, underlying breast tissue is reduced using liposuction and direct excision, the remaining tissue is lifted and shaped, and the remaining skin is closed using subcutaneous sutures.  The incision lines are permanent, but the scars will fade and improve over time.

Breast Reduction Results

After surgery, patients may have a drain on each side.  If drains are placed, they will typically come out the very next day.  Heavy bandaging will be in place immediately after surgery but will become less bulky through dressing changes over the course of two weeks.  Patients are usually able to return to light activity after four to seven days and strenuous activity after six to eight weeks. The results of a breast reduction are immediately visible and will improve as the swelling subsides and the scarring begins to settle. The new reduced breast size alleviates pain and physical limitations that may have been caused by large breasts.
