Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a common condition that causes enlarged breasts in men. This can be caused by a number of factors including hormonal imbalances, localized fat deposits, genetics, and medications. Gynecomastia is experienced by nearly 50 percent of all men at some point in their lives. While most men with gynecomastia have enlarged breasts as teenagers, they typically reduce in size with age. In some cases, enlarged male breasts persist over time or can return later in life. In these cases, Dr. Swail offers male breast reduction that can treat this condition. Patients who have undergone this procedure report high satisfaction rates.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
This procedure is usually done with a combination of surgical excision and liposuction. An incision is made around the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple) and excess fat and tissue are removed. In some cases, a small ¼-inch incision is made at the base of the breast and liposuction is used to remove fatty tissue surrounding what is accessible from the areolar incision. Scars are usually minimal with this procedure, and patient satisfaction is high. In cases where excess skin needs to be removed, most commonly from significant weight loss, additional incisions and scarring can occur.
Male Breast Reduction Results
Following the procedure, patients will generally be able to return home the same day. Often, a drain will be placed in each side that will be removed the very next day. Patients can also return to light activity within the first few postoperative days and can resume strenuous activity after four to six weeks. It is common for tissue to remain firm and lumpy for several weeks following this procedure, but it will soften and smooth out over time. In order to facilitate a speedy recovery, a supportive wrap or compressive garment is often recommended for several weeks.

For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
