Gynecomastia is a common condition that causes enlarged breasts in men. Typically caused by a number of factors, including hormonal imbalances, localized fat deposits, genetics, and medications, gynecomastia is experienced by nearly 50 percent of all men at some point in their lives. While most men with gynecomastia have enlarged breasts as teenagers, they typically reduce in size as the man ages. In some cases, enlarged male breasts persist over time and can return later in life. In these cases, Dr. Swail offers male breast reduction treatments that can treat this condition. Patients who have undergone this procedure report high satisfaction rates.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
This procedure is usually done with a combination of surgical excision and liposuction. An incision is made around the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple) and excess fat and tissue are removed. In more severe cases, a small ¼-inch incision is made at the base of the breast and liposuction is used to remove any stubborn pockets of fat. Scars are usually minimal with this procedure, and patient satisfaction is high. In extreme cases where excess skin needs to be removed, more significant scarring can occur.
Male Breast Reduction Results
Following the procedure, patients will generally be able to return home the same day. Typically, patients can also return to light activity the first postoperative day and can resume strenuous activity after four weeks. It is common for tissue to remain firm and lumpy for several weeks following a male breast reduction, but it will soften and smooth out over time. In order to facilitate a speedy recovery, a supportive wrap is often recommended to assist the healing process.

Dr. Jeffrey Swail is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the Colorado Medical Society, and the Boulder County Medical Society.
Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, he earned his medical degree in 1989 and completed surgical training at Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
