Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is designed to rejuvenate puffy, sagging, or tired looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Swail often combines this procedure with Botox® or a facelift to rejuvenate the eyes and minimize the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet, or dark circles under the eyes. Blepharoplasty can treat a number of conditions including:
- Excess fatty deposits that give the upper eyelids a puffy appearance
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid. In some cases, this loose and sagging skin can cause visual impairment
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid
- Bags under the eyes
- Droopiness of the lower eyelid, revealing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye)
Eyelid surgery is generally performed under local anesthesia, and can be performed in as little as 45 minutes.
Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Incisions for the eyelid surgery procedure are along natural folds and creases within the structure of the eyelid to reduce visible scarring. For an upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made within the natural crease of the eyelid, allowing for repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and tissue, and removal of any excess skin. The incision for a lower eyelid surgery can often be hidden inside of the lower eyelid, which is commonly referred to as a transconjunctival incision. In some cases, an incision will be made just below the lash line if excess skin needs to be removed.
Eyelid Surgery Results
After the procedure is complete, lubricating ointment and a cold compress is typically applied to the area reduce swelling and bruising. The final result, once swelling and bruising subside, is a smooth and better defined eyelid region with a more alert and refreshed appearance.
Dr. Swail meets with each patient personally to discuss his or her desired outcome and expectations prior to each procedure. This allows Dr. Swail to design a customized procedure to achieve great long-lasting results.

Dr. Jeffrey Swail is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the Colorado Medical Society, and the Boulder County Medical Society.
Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, he earned his medical degree in 1989 and completed surgical training at Queen’s University and Dalhousie University.
For more than a decade, Dr. Swail has volunteered his skills on surgical mission trips, providing cleft lip and palate care to children in the Philippines through Mending Faces, where he serves as Chair of Surgical Services. He received the organization’s Humanitarian Award in 2007.
