Otoplasty

Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is designed to correct protruding or disfigured ears that bother adults and children alike. Ear surgery creates a natural shape and contour to the ear, while providing balance and proportion to the face. Even a small correction to the profile of a person’s ears can have a profound effect on his or her overall facial appearance. Ear surgery is a procedure designed to help children avoid ridicule and aid adults who may have insecurities surrounding the appearance of their ears. Dr. Swail understands the frustration that comes from ridicule over the appearance of ears and works to correct any abnormalities with the ear. Ear surgery specifically treats:

  • Overly large ears
  • Protruding ears occurring on one or both sides
  • “Lop ear,” “cupped ear,” and “shell ear”
  • Large or stretched earlobes
  • Lobes with creases and wrinkles

Otoplasty Procedure

Ear surgery can be performed under local or IV sedation depending on the amount of correction necessary and the discomfort level of the patient. Dr. Swail will recommend the best option following an initial consultation.

Incisions are generally made behind the ear. When necessary, incisions may be made on the front of the ear but will be hidden in the natural folds and creases of the ear to minimize visible scarring. Once the incision is made, cartilage is re-shaped to match the desired contour of the newly shaped ear. It is secured in place by internal, non-removable sutures.

Ear Surgery Results

Results following otoplasty are almost immediate in cases of correcting a protruding ear. In more extensive surgeries, results may appear in stages over time. Any scarring as a result of the procedure is generally hidden behind the ear or in the natural folds and creases of the ear.
Dr. Swail meets with each patient personally to discuss his or her desired outcome and expectations prior to each procedure. This allows him to design a customized otoplasty procedure to achieve great long-lasting results.
